A formidable figure in the Ramakien
Thotsakan is the powerful ruler of Lanka in the Ramakien, Thailand’s adaptation of the Ramayana. He is portrayed as a yaksha with immense strength and magical ability.
The epic’s central conflict begins when Thotsakan abducts Sida, the wife of Phra Ram. Phra Ram and his allies ultimately defeat him after a long war.
Power transformed into protection
Guardian giants are familiar features at Thai sacred sites. Here, Thotsakan’s once-destructive power is understood in a new role: standing watch at the boundary of the temple.

Thotsakan stands with Sahasadecha outside the ordination hall.
- Notice the green face, ornate armor, crown, and club.
- View the guardian without climbing on its base or disturbing offerings.
