About Buddhist Ordination
Buddhist ordination (Buat) is one of the most important rites of passage in Theravada Buddhism. At Wat Thai of Los Angeles, men may be ordained as monks (Bhikkhu) or novices (Samanera) in accordance with the Vinaya (monastic code). Ordination is considered an act of great merit, benefiting both the individual and their family.
Prerequisites
Candidates for ordination must meet the following requirements:
- Must be a male at least 20 years of age (for full Bhikkhu ordination) or at least 7 years old (for Samanera/novice ordination)
- Must be free from contagious diseases and serious physical disabilities
- Must not be a fugitive from the law or have outstanding debts
- Must have parental or guardian consent
Cost
There is no fixed fee for ordination. The cost is based on a donation (dana) to the temple. The temple office can provide guidance on customary donation amounts and any associated expenses for the ceremony.
Ceremony Preparation
Prior to the ordination ceremony, the candidate must:
- Meet with the abbot or senior monk for an interview and instruction on monastic rules
- Prepare the requisite monastic items, including robes, an alms bowl, and other necessities
- Participate in a pre-ordination ceremony (Tham Khwan Nag) with family and friends
Parent/Guardian Responsibilities
Parents or guardians of the ordination candidate are expected to:
- Provide written consent for the ordination
- Participate in the pre-ordination and ordination ceremonies, including the traditional procession around the Uposatha-Sala
