Ordination Information (การบวช)

Learn about the sacred tradition of Buddhist ordination at our temple.

About Buddhist Ordination

Buddhist ordination is one of the most significant ceremonies in Theravada Buddhism. It is an ancient Thai tradition for Thai Buddhist men over 20 years old — once in their life they should become Buddhist monks to practice Buddhist disciplines. At Wat Thai of Los Angeles, we offer ordination services for those who wish to enter the monastic life.

Prerequisites

  • Candidates must be at least 20 years old
  • Must have prior approval by a parent or guardian
  • Must be accompanied by the parent or guardian
  • The temple will not accept individuals applying alone to become a monk

Cost

The cost for the Buddhist Monk ceremony at Wat Thai of Los Angeles is not required; it is traditionally made by donation by the host.

Ceremony Preparation

  • The individual's haircut will be provided at the temple one hour before the ceremony starts
  • The temple will provide the ceremonial white gown for the individual
  • Although it is not mandatory, the temple recommends bringing a white colored t-shirt to wear underneath the ceremonial white gown

Parent/Guardian Responsibilities

The parents or guardian must come to the temple and set a schedule for the individual. Additionally, the parents or guardian must:

  • Prepare the offering for the 13 monks
  • Prepare the coins to throw during the ceremony before entering the temple
