The many Mudras in Buddhism.
Looking at sculptures of the Buddha from Burma and Thailand in LACMA’s collection, discuss the eight commonly used mudras (hand gestures) and their symbolic meanings. Each mudra represents protection and fearlessness, enlightenment, meditation, compassion and knowledge.
Participants will create an outline of their hand to replicate one of the mudras. The characteristics of the selected mudras will be highlighted through color using liquid water-color, found imagery and collage paper.
